Phae Dorman Letter

Nov. 11, 1960

Dear Mom,

Well, I got your letter and the address again is 2907 Ronan Street Apt. 4. We also have a phone now and the number is Melrose 10213. I can dial direct to you I think. Is that why your number was changed?

Mom, I don't want to say anything about the elections.

I know you worked hard and you are probably disappointed somewhat, to the least. I didn't believe either one them. I think Kennedy is a bit more dynamic than Nixon. All we can do now is hope and pray that he will do the right thing. Everyone here is sore as the devil. This is strictly Republican territory.

We went to church Sunday and it is really the most beautiful church I have ever seen. The congregation is 2800, a Methodist Church. We have also been paid visits by 3 ministers and the Chamber of Commerce to welcome us to the city.

I am going to join the Dow Women's Chorus with a friend of mine from Bloomington who is living here now also. I think I told we told you we were the only Negro, didn’t I? Well, we went to the Laundromat and a little girl looked at Evelyn and said, and said, "She looks like a little nigger." I told her we were colored and not to ever use that word because it hurt our feelings. Oh, Me!! I hope we don't have too many incidents like that!

Linn likes his job and we have been invited so many places don't know which way to turn.

Guess what! There are no taverns here. They voted the issue down in the last election. Everyone here has, on the average, four children.. Lord, deliver me!! There are people here from everywhere in the states and foreign countries. Met a girl from South Africa the other day (she is white).
